Thousands of university students from all over Spain participate in UNIVERSITY Esportsa global project that combines educational activities and video game competitions, present in 26 countries on 4 continents. Coinciding with the school calendar, the first stage of the project has concluded with its presence in GAMERGY by Cecotec 2023an esports, gaming and entertainment event that took place in Madrid last weekend.
UNIVERSITY Esports had one of the liveliest and busiest stands at GAMERGY by Cecotec, where young and old could enjoy the many activities available. In addition, the event hosted the finals of UNIVERSITY Esports GAMERGY Qualifierswhere students had the opportunity to experience what it is like to play in person alongside their peers and compete for a total prize pool of 10,000 euros.
The ninth season of UNIVERSITY Esports is possible thanks to the support of WD_BLACK and to the collaboration of Wuolahthe note sharing platform for university students.
Champions in Madrid
The teams qualified for the finals of UNIVERSITY Esports GAMERGY Qualifiers faced off for victory in the disciplines of the four games of the current season of UNIVERSITY Esports.
As for the games of Riot Gamesthe team “Amigas Cayetano”formed by players from the Universitat Politècnica de València, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, the Universitat de Barcelona, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the University of Malaga, defeated UCAM Tokiers Academyof the Catholic University of Murcia, in League of Legends.
On the other hand, “meowmeowmeow”representing the University of Alicante, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the Universitat Politècnica de València, achieved the victory against “UPC PEEK”of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the University of Seville, in the final of VALORANT.
At Teamfight Tacticsthe single player strategy game, the title went to “Odesza”student of the University of Barcelona. The final of the Rocket Leaguein which the team “Lirinki”made up of players from the University of Granada and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, defeated “Petankos”with representatives of the University of Castilla La Mancha and Universitat Rovira i Virgili, crowned as champions of this first split.
Bringing students closer to the community
Esports and gaming have emerged as a dynamic environment that has captured global attention and sparked growing interest among gamers and consumers. This evolution has not only positioned video games as a core element of the entertainment industry (generating more revenue than music and film combined), but has also generated numerous career opportunities in areas ranging from marketing and event management to broadcasting and team management.
One of the main objectives of UNIVERSITY Esports is to bring young people closer to the world of esports and to introduce them to the many facets of the ecosystem. More than 3,000 students participated in the talks and workshops workshops carried out in GAMERGY by Cecotecwhere they were able to learn more about the benefits of video games for their personal and work life.
