Speed camera detectors soon to be officially banned? Why I still recommend OOONO, Blitzer.de and Waze

I have been using the OOONO 2 speed camera detector when driving for years, but in 2026 it will be banned forever.

I have been using the OOONO 2 speed camera detector when driving for years, but in 2026 it will be banned forever.

It’s a small, black button on the headliner of my car that greets me with a quick flash and beep before every trip. I have been using the OOONO speed camera warning system for years and before that I was running the well-known Blitzer.de app for a long time. For me, this is part of the basic equipment in the car, but if you believe a current headline, this could soon be over.

»Countries want to ban speed camera apps completely«it was said recently. The well-known media lawyer Christian Solmecke also dealt with the topic in detail in a video. The Federal Council is planning to tighten the road traffic regulations, which is quite a challenge. Do I have to scrap my little helper now?

Can I currently use OOONO, Blitzer.de, Waze & Co.?

Currently, simply installing such apps and owning the OOONO CO-DRIVER are completely legal. Only the operation of devices that are intended to display traffic monitoring measures is prohibited.

Real foxes from our community pointed out to me that blue “speed cameras” are actually not speed cameras, but rather control the truck toll.

In practice, I will still use my OOONO. Why? Because it makes my car journeys safer. And yes, it saves me a ticket every now and then. But this is not a call to break the law or to rage, but rather my honest experience after years of use.

OOONO CO-DRIVER NO2 in everyday life: More than just a speed camera detector

“You just want to race with impunity!” This is the first thing that critical voices say about the topic. I strongly disagree with that. For me, the OOONO is primarily a safety feature that has probably already saved my life and limb.

For me, warning about danger spots is much more important than warning about speed cameras. The community behind Blitzer.de and OOONO is huge. If parts – or in my case a truck – are lying on the road, other road users report the sighting and a short time later Hundreds of following vehicles with OOONO and Co. are warned visually and acoustically.

I don’t want to be without this speed camera and hazard warning system anymore

My most important experience with the OOONO

A few years ago, when I was on the way to an appointment on an almost empty highway, I heard such a warning tone and I reduced my speed. Behind a hill I saw the reason for the warning: a truck, but not on the hard shoulder or the right lane, but half in the fast lane. I still remember the truck driver standing behind his truck in a panic, waving a high-visibility vest. An emergency stop was necessary.

Things ended well for me and the truck driver, but I don’t even want to imagine what would have happened without a prior warning.

Change in the law in 2026: Speed camera detectors now officially illegal?

So far the legal situation – even if vague – has been clear on at least one point: The use is prohibited while driving. Anyone who gets caught pays a €75 fine and even scores a point in Flensburg. However, purchasing a corresponding app or the OOONO speed camera warning button is permitted. Waze, Blitzer.de, OOONO and Co. also allow you to switch off the speed camera warning in the settings and thus remain permanently permitted.

The Federal Council now wants to start there. As Christian Solmecke explains in his analysis, the states are demanding a change in the law that no longer just… usebut already the mere one Installation such software on your smartphone. This should make it easier for the police to punish violations. If there is an app with a speed camera warning function on the cell phone, the offense would already be fulfilled. Solmecke considers this initiative to be legally “extremely dangerous” and, what’s more, disproportionate. Many navigation apps have integrated warning functions. Would all of these apps be illegal across the board? Fortunately, the federal government has currently rejected this proposal.

The so-called “passenger trick” should also be mentioned at this point. If your occupants use a speed camera warning app and put their cell phone in the center console, for example, you’re out of the loop!

Personally, my OOONO danger warning system has already helped me in countless situations I use the term “danger warning” quite deliberately. From aquaplaning, broken down vehicles on the motorway or the end of a traffic jam that is barely visible – the OOONO warns me of everyday dangers and thus saves me from braking situations, not just fines.

Conclusion: I don’t want to be banned from driving safely!

In my opinion, the planned change in the law is problematic, to put it mildly. An installation ban could hardly be controlled without massively infringing on all of our privacy. Fortunately, even if Christian Solmecke describes the initiative as a “crazy idea”, its legal feasibility remains doubtful.

So I’ll keep my OOONO. Not to speed through the construction site at 180 km/h, but to use modern technologies and the swarm intelligence of other road users for my own safety and, conversely, to contribute to the safety of others with my warnings. Anyone who uses such speed cameras and danger warning systems drives past dangerous areas more consciously and more slowly, and that is exactly in everyone’s interest.

If you’re just hearing about this technology for the first time and you like driving, then take a look at the OOONO. Maybe the little button is the perfect addition to your car too!
