Fans of video games, listen up. We’ve had a few months in the past with a lot of different adaptations of recognizable series and franchises, but few are as packed as April. This month’s main theme is adaptations of video games, but in addition there are plenty of other promising new projects coming to cinemas and streaming services. So, with much planned, let’s move on to the next installment of Screen Time.
Before we begin, a little housekeeping. We based our choices on a British release calendar, so be sure to check locally for accurate listings and information.
Devil May Cry [Netflix] – April 3
Kickoff is the next big collaboration between Netflix and Castlevania showrunner Adi Shankar. This time, the anime talent is leaving Konami franchises behind in favor of working on a Capcom IP, specifically the beloved Devil May Cry. In this show, we meet Dante and see how the demon hunter is tasked with saving the world from supernatural and twisted threats.
The Life Owner [Prime Video] – April 3
One of Prime Video’s big additions this month is led by Kevin Bacon, who here plays a murdered and then resurrected bounty hunter, who must now use his specific skills to track down and eliminate demons who have escaped hell, all on behalf of the devil. This action series will be violent, dark and also a bit humorous, becoming a must-watch for subscribers in April.
A Minecraft movie – April 4
Another major video game adaptation making its debut in April will bring Mojang’s immensely popular blocky world to cinemas. A Minecraft Movie is pretty much what’s on the tin, and sees a bunch of individuals transported to the unusual land and tasked with finding a way home, albeit with the help of Jack Black’s Steve. With a cast that also includes Jason Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge, this is a film you don’t want to miss in theaters.

Black Mirror: Season 4 [Netflix] – April 10
One of Netflix’s most famous series makes its grand return this month, bringing with it a series of new anthology episodes. The seventh season of Black Mirror features a stacked cast and pins them down in uncomfortable or poignant scenarios that tend to parody or serve as a satire of some form of reality. Needless to say, if you’ve been missing out on some unorthodox drama, this is the ticket.
G20 [Prime Video] – April 10
The other big Prime Video addition of the month will see Viola Davis take center stage and appear as the president of the United States who must fight to survive terrorists who have taken over the G20 political summit. With Anthony Starr in the cast, this film is all about action and drama on a big world stage, with a theme that feels very 80s in design.
Your friends and neighbors [Apple TV+] – April 11
The biggest Apple TV+ project worth keeping an eye on in April is the Jon Hamm-led Your Friends & Neighbours, a drama series in which the former Mad Men actor turns to a life of burglary to keep funding his expensive socialite lifestyle, after going through a tough divorce and losing his job. Andor: Season 2 [Disney+] – April 22
Many will tell you that Andor is the best Star Wars has been in years, and while there is certainly an argument to support that, this level of success puts a lot of emphasis and expectation on the second season, which will debut in April. This season will come out in four parts, each exploring a year in the four years between the first season of the series and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, meaning you can expect a big and compelling story in this next set of episodes.
You: Season 5 [Netflix] – April 24
Penn Badgeley’s Joe Goldberg has the perfect life, despite many, many years of creepy stalking. After returning to the town where Joe’s problems first began, he falls back into old habits, while also being haunted by ghosts from his past. Another great theatrical video game adaptation and the latest for the month of April, David F. Sandberg’s Until Dawn is inspired by Supermassive’s popular horror game and sees a collection of youngsters tasked with surviving the night while being hunted by various mysterious enemies and killers. The catch? This terrifying night is also a loop, meaning each dawn is reset, leaving the gang with the task of figuring out how to break the cycle.
