Samsung launches Galaxy A54, A34 and A14 in Romania, its mid-range models for 2023

Samsung has officially launched its Galaxy A series of devices for 2023 in Romania, which includes the Galaxy A14 models (in LTE and 5G variants), along with the Galaxy A34 5G and A54 5G. The new models come with designs aligned with the Galaxy S23 series models, with flat backs and individual cameras on the back without an island to incorporate them, high specs for the mid-range, and significantly higher prices than last year.

Galaxy A54 gets a few upgrades, but also a significantly higher price

The Galaxy A54 is the model most users are probably waiting for, being the successor to some of the most successful phones on the market of recent years. It comes with a 6.4″ OLED display, Full HD+ resolution at 120 Hz and an octa-core Exynos 1380 chipset, built on the 5nm manufacturing process. Although there are also 6GB RAM variants, in the UK, the A54 only comes in an 8GB variant with 128 or 256GB storage.

The biggest upgrades seem to be in the camera department, though, where we get a 50-megapixel sensor with optical stabilisation, as well as VDIS technology for electronic video stabilisation, which we also found on the Galaxy S23. The secondary camera has an ultra-wide lens, but the third is just a macro, which probably not many people will use.

Price is the touchy subject with this model, though. While last year prices started at under 2,000 lei for the Galaxy A53, this year the base model, with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage, starts at 2,399 lei and the 256 from 2,600 lei. Samsung is also offering an introductory offer, giving vouchers in the form of Samsung Points on the official website of 100 and 200 lei respectively during the launch period.

Galaxy A34 offers comparable specs at a starting price under 2,000 lei

The Galaxy A34, the next model down, comes with a screen comparable in capabilities, with a 6.6″ diagonal, but with a MediaTek Dimensity 1080 processor, which could be placed in a similar performance zone to the Exynos 1380. It does, however, come in 6+128GB or 8+256GB configurations and with a more modest camera set-up: 48 megapixels on the main camera, 8 megapixels ultrawide and a 5 megapixel macro. The battery remains the same, at 5,000 mAh with 25 W fast charging on the cord.

Visually, this model has a U-shaped cutout in the screen to accommodate the 13-megapixel front-facing camera, while the Galaxy A54 has an Infinity-O screen with a “punch hole”. Both models, however, are waterproof to IP67 standard, something we don’t see much of in this mid-range product line.

Starting price is 1,899 lei for the base model and 2,199 lei for the 256 GB model. And these models get vouchers worth 80 and 150 lei respectively.

The Galaxy A14 is the entry-level model with compromises typical of the market segment

Finally we have the Galaxy A14 with 4G and 5G. These have 6.6″ LCD screens with Full HD+ resolution at 90 Hz, and start at 64 GB storage variants, both with 4 GB RAM. The 4G model uses a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset, while the 5G model uses a Dimensity 700, also from MediaTek. The camera systems use a 50 megapixel main sensor and 2 megapixel sensors (depth and macro). Of course, the main sensor doesn’t have optical stabilization either.

The 4G version starts at 999 lei lei with 64 GB and the 5G version starts at 1,099 lei. There are also higher variants with 128 GB for 50 and 100 lei more respectively. These models do not benefit from gift vouchers.

All these phones are now available in the offers of specialist stores and on Samsung’s online store.
