Romanian mythology, in video games: how you can create games with Prince the Vain and Ileana Consânzeana

Tales of Us Game Jam is an event where mythology and gaming will intersect. The event will bring together game developers who want to make a name for themselves by creating an original title.

The Game Jam will take place from 30 September to 2 October at CINETic and is organised by Tales of Us and RGDA (Romanian Video Game Developers Association). The role of the event is to showcase internationally the local culture and talent of young Romanian developers.

Video games with characters from Romanian fairy tales

If you want to participate, please note that the Game Jam is open to all programmers, artists and designers who are 18 years old or older. So every developer is welcome to participate in the Game Jam, from beginners to seasoned professionals looking for a fun and unique way to create games outside of their job. If you want to participate in the event, you can register on the RGDA website.

“We’re delighted that Tales Of Us has chosen Romania as one of the locations from which to source folk tales and fairy tales. We at RGDA see great potential in combining Romanian mythology with unique game design. We hope that the organization of this game jam will be part of a larger discussion about how our folklore and folktales can be a great source of inspiration to create original games in our country that can become successful titles around the world”, says Andreea Medvedovici Per, RGDA Executive Director.

“My knowledge of Romania and its culture was limited to stereotypes about houses full of garlic and vampire stories. Today, our work with Tales of Us allows us to support and explore stories that move away from these one-sided narratives and stories. We are amazed by the diversity of Romanian stories and myths we have discovered and can’t wait to see what they turn into during a Game Jam,” said Eva Vonk, producer and creative director at Tales of Us.

As for the organisation of the event, it will be a hybrid, with up to 30 participants attending CINETic and unlimited places for those who choose to participate online. The deadline for applications is 21 September 2022.
