Return of a legendary name: DeLorean launches a new model

DeLorean has released a new image of its future electric sports car, revealing a modern, ground-based design.

DeLorean is planning a comeback and is preparing a new high-performance electric car, which will be unveiled at this year’s Pebble Beach Elegance Contest on August 18th.

This recently released image of the rear of the car indicates that it will have a new design that will be influenced by the brand’s iconic DMC-12, rather than being a complete modernization of that car.

The new DeLorean will adopt a two-tone body finish, with a sloping roofline and horizontal slats along the rear window – a small nod to the DMC-12. A thin bar of LED light will extend to the rear and extend to a pair of muscular corners that rise above the rear wheels, and DeLorean did not follow the industry trend of digital rear-view mirrors, but instead mounted a set of thin, conventional items. Elsewhere, it looks like there is a deep rear speaker and a DeLorean nameplate under the left rear headlight.

DeLorean previously released the teaser video below on Twitter and YouTube to announce the arrival of the new EV, which the company is developing with Italdesign – the style house that wrote the original DMC-12.

A well-known name

Speaking about Italdesign’s collaboration, DeLorean’s head of marketing, Troy Beetz, said: “We are thrilled that the next evolution of the DeLorean brand will be our historic partnership with Italdesign and a vehicle that will present our vision for the future.”

From the teaser video, it is clear that the overall silhouette of the new model will be inspired by the DMC-12, with a similar shape of the windshield, long hood and doors with seagull wings with the silver screen symbol. In front, there is a new DeLorean badge that stretches across the width of the car, along with a pair of narrow headlights.

The first DeLorean model, and the only one so far, was powered by a 2.8-liter V6 engine that developed 130 hp and 207 Nm of torque. And although the details of the powertrain for this new car have not yet been confirmed, it will be completely electric.

The original DeLorean DMC-12 found its fame in the 1980s SF movie franchise, Back to the Future. However, while the car became a legend on the big screen, the company that built it went down in the annals of history, replicating only a few years in the production cycle of the car, after a series of financial problems and production difficulties.

DeLorean recently regained his feet thanks to Stephen Wynne. In 1995, he purchased the remaining parts, brand and stock rights for the company and set up a new Texas-based private company to support the existing network of parts and service owners.
