Recently at its Tudum event, Netflix shared an update on Liu Cixin’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Three-Body Problem with the public. First announced in 2020, the next series from Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will arrive sometime next year.
Netflix shared a teaser from behind the scenes showing a few character moments. Some of the actors set to star in the project include Benedict Wong (The Martian, Doctor Strange), Eiza González (Baby Driver), and John Bradley and Liam Cunningham of Game of Thrones fame.
The Three-Body Problem, on Netflix next year
Considered a modern sci-fi masterpiece The Three-Body Problem was first published in China in 2008. It took another six years for the novel to arrive in the West, and it subsequently became the first Asian novel to win a Hugo Award. Cixin and Ken Liu, who translated two of the novels in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy into English, are consulting on the live-action adaptation.
Netflix has contracted Benioff and Weiss with a lucrative $200 million deal in 2019. The Three-Body Problem is the first project the duo has done for the company – though they have also produced a series starring Sandra Oh. Netflix will likely share more information about The Three-Body Problem series in the coming months.
During Netflix’s global fan event, Tudum, executive producers D.B. Weiss, David Benioff and Alexander Woo showed off some behind-the-scenes footage of the upcoming sci-fi series.
“3 Body Problem is a history of humanity from first contact with an alien civilization to the end of the universe,” Woo said.
Filming also included interviews with the cast, many of whom praised the complex nature of the story, with star Jess Hong describing the show as “visual, something unique.” It has been confirmed that the first season will be released on Netflix sometime in 2023.
