New murder brings to 137 the number of social leaders killed in Colombia since the beginning of the year

Colombia’s Institute for Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz) has denounced a new murder of a social leader, identified as Edinson Murillo Ararat, in the department of Cauca, in the southwest of the country.

Ararat, a member of the Cimarrona Guard and a member of the Community Council of Cuenca, in the north of the department, was assaulted on Thursday by two armed men while he was riding a motorcycle with his escort, Yeifer Medina Chivatá, in the Taminango village.

Chivatá was also killed in the attack, confirms the Colombian organization.

This death brings to 137 the number of social leaders killed in Colombia so far in 2022, and 1,364 since the signing of the Peace Accords in 2016, according to Indepaz estimates.
