A new developer diary is available for Payday 3 from Starbreeze Studios, in which the team talks about progression and skills. While Payday 2 had a skill tree where players could upgrade, the sequel drops that concept and instead opts for Skill Lines.
As senior game designer Miodrag Kovačević explains, “How it basically works is that we have a base node, upgrade nodes and a Mastery node. The upgrade nodes range from 3 to 5, depending on the skill, and then we have Mastery nodes, which are weaker but don’t require you to have upgrades or basic equipment.”
Interestingly, you don’t need an upgrade to move to the next in line. Players only need to unlock the Basic Node and can then choose the upgrades they want.
As for Crime Net Stacks or C-Stacks, this is the secondary currency that players will use. You will still use cash for weapons and such, but by converting them into C-Stacks, you can buy special weapons, cosmetics and “high-end equipment.” They are also essential to get the latest upgrade for weapons.
It is worth noting that the more money converted into C-Stacks, the more expensive the process becomes, but fortunately the cost resets weekly. Starbreeze clarifies that this is not a premium currency and that you can only earn C-Stacks by playing the game.
Payday 3 will be released on Sept. 21 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC.
