Microsoft will allow developers to create widgets for Windows 11

Microsoft has been flirting with the idea of desktop widgets for a long time. They originally debuted on Windows Vista and continued on Windows 7, but disappeared completely on versions 8, 8.1, and 10, being replaced by the animated “Live Tiles” icons. Windows 11 dropped the “Metro UI” interface, which included active icons, and a new widget drawer was implemented. The company has announced that developers will soon be able to launch new widgets for the operating system.

Until now, only Microsoft could develop new widgets on Windows 11

The only widgets currently available on Windows 11 have been developed by Microsoft and integrated directly into the operating system. However, the company has announced that it wants to open the development of widgets to independent developers, who will be able to attach panels in the official drawer in Windows 11.

It seems that Microsoft plans to allow the attachment of Windows application widgets, as we see in various mobile applications on iOS and Android, but these applications will not be limited to one type. Whether developers choose to launch applications in the classic “win32” format with regular executables, or choose to create applications for the Microsoft Store in PWA format, they will also be able to integrate widgets.

“We are energized by the feedback from customers so far regarding widgets, as they enjoy quick access to the most important content for them in a fast way that does not interrupt their regular activities. Starting this year, [dezvoltatorii] will be able to start developing widgets as complementary experiences for Win32 and PWA applications on Windows 11 using the Adaptive Cards platform. ”said Panos Panay, head of Microsoft’s device and Windows division.

Once the Adaptive Cards platform for widgets is opened, they can be placed on the screen and directly on the desktop, or in the Start menu, and not just in the dedicated drawer, as they have worked so far.
