VR glasses have finally arrived where I’ve wanted them for a long time – they are VR glasses that literally everyone can use. For me it is even a small revolution, like the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Wii once were. A console for the living room that simply ushers in a new era.

It represents a completely new way to play without the need for cables or additional devices such as a PC. The Glasses work completely independently and not only offers games, but also options such as streaming films on a huge virtual screen – no matter where you are.

Meta Quest 3 sets new VR standards – now what?

The Nintendo Switch 2 may be even more hotly anticipated, but the Meta Quest 3 brings VR gaming right into your living room – for real. In many games it scans your surroundings and inserts the VR content into it. So you can build towers, fight against zombies or… in your living room see a car crash through your wall.

The game selection for Meta Quest 3 is another reason why it’s so exciting. Title like Batman: Arkham Shadow allow you to completely immerse yourself in the world of the Dark Knight. Float through Gotham, fight enemies and beat up the bad guys. There are now VR games have gotten a lot better – As Batman, for example, you actually take the elevator down to the Batcave as Bruce Wayne, put on your equipment and get started.

There are two versions of Meta Quest 3 – the “normal” and the much cheaper 3s. Here are the differences:

Display and lenses:

• Meta Quest 3: Features pancake lenses that allow for a slimmer design and are less prone to light reflections. The resolution is 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye with a field of view of 110 degrees. These are considered really very good.
• Meta Quest 3S: Uses Fresnel lenses, similar to the Quest 2, resulting in a slightly chunkier design. The resolution is 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye with a field of view of 96 degrees. The difference in quality compared to the 3 is noticeable, but not a “must”.

2. Sensors:

• Meta Quest 3: Integrates a depth sensor that enables automatic scanning of the room for an enhanced mixed reality experience.
• Meta Quest 3S: Foregoes the depth sensor, which can limit spatial perception and some mixed reality functions.

3. Setting options:

• Meta Quest 3: Offers an infinitely adjustable lens distance (IPD) between 53 and 70 mm as well as an eye relief mechanism to adjust the distance between lenses and face.
• Meta Quest 3S: The lens distance can only be adjusted in three fixed steps (58, 63 and 68 mm); the eye relief mechanism is missing.

4. Connections and Audio:

• Meta Quest 3: Has separate ports for charging and headphones so you can do both at the same time.
• Meta Quest 3S: Has a single USB-C port that serves both charging and headphones, making simultaneous use difficult.

5. Storage capacity:

• Meta Quest 3: Available with 128GB or 512GB storage.
• Meta Quest 3S: Available with 128GB or 256GB storage. Both models do not offer the possibility of internal memory expansion.

Whereas the Meta Quest 3s only costs around €330, the Meta Quest 3 costs €550. The 3s is worth it for anyone who just wants to play a bit of VR or watch films in cinema format on the go. The Meta Quest 3 is again a noticeably better quality VR headset. If you can spare the €220, you should grab it.
