How to transfer WhatsApp history from Android to iOS

Meta reps have been announcing for a few weeks now that WhatsApp now officially allows account transfers between Android and iOS, but the feature hasn’t been enabled on all accounts simultaneously. The official WhatsApp account on Twitter, however, announced that all users can now officially transfer from one platform to the other without any complicated workarounds. There is now also a tech support page that explains every step and everything needed to move from Android to iPhone. The ability to transfer backwards had already been available for several months.

Unfortunately, there is a very big limitation. It requires that the iPhone that is the final destination of the WhatsApp archive be a new smartphone or one that has been returned to factory settings, as the transfer can only be done on first setup via Apple’s Android app, Move to iOS.

Here are the steps to transfer your WhatsApp chat archive from Android to iOS

Required

  • A phone with Android 5 Lollipop or newer
  • An iPhone with iOS 15.5 or newer
  • Move to iOS app installed on your Android phone
  • WhatsApp version 2.22.10.70 installed on iOS phone
  • WhatsApp version 2.22.7.74 installed on Android phone
  • Use the same phone number for login on both devices
  • Your iPhone must be new or reset to factory settings in order to be recognized by the Move to iOS app to move data from Android to it
  • Both devices must be plugged in
  • Both devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, or the Android phone must be connected to the iPhone hotspot

What happens to my data?

  • The transferred data is not stored in the cloud as a result of the migration process. You need to create an iCloud backup for this.
  • WhatsApp does not see the data you transfer
  • Your Android phone will keep this data stored locally until you delete the WhatsApp app or completely reset your phone.

What messages can I transfer to my new phone?

  • You can transfer personal messages
  • You cannot transfer messages with payments between users

Can I transfer my call history?

  • WhatsApp call history cannot be transferred from Android to iPhone.

The process may seem complicated, but it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. Depending on the number of chats in your personal archive and other data you want to transfer from Android to iOS, the transfer time might increase.
