How Do You Live, the latest film from acclaimed animator Hayao Miyazaki, has opened in Japan. The film has not been given any trailer, nor have clips or still images officially surfaced, creating an aura of mystery around the film.
The plot of How Do You Live focuses on a 15-year-old boy coping with the death of his father. Knowing Miyazaki, who has previously worked on Spirited Away, The Wind Rises and other Studio Ghibli classics, there is probably some kind of mystical element added. But we really won’t know until we see the film.
Reuters spoke with a few Japanese moviegoers who saw the film. Student Michiru Miyasato said that because she was “knew nothing about it beforehand, my excitement increased even more, which I thought was really cool.”
Yumiko Kokubo, a social worker, said that “because there was absolutely no promotion, it felt like I could experience it all directly with my body.”
There is currently no overseas release date for the film, but we are eagerly looking forward to it. Also, this is the first Miyazaki film with IMAX screenings.
