China calls for “restraint” from British politicians, says its problems do not depend on Beijing

Chinese authorities have called on Monday for “restraint” to British politicians and said that by circumventing the alleged Chinese threat “they will not succeed in solving the problems” of the United Kingdom.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Asian giant, Zhao Lijian, has thus referred during a press conference to the words of the Conservative Rishi Sunak, former Minister of Finance of the United Kingdom and candidate to succeed Boris Johnson as leader of the ‘Tories’ and Prime Minister of the country.

“I want to say to some British politicians that they cannot solve their problems with arguments related to the China threat and other irresponsible comments,” he said.

He has, however, indicated that the choice of the next Conservative leader is an “internal matter” for the country. Sunak had previously pointed to China as the biggest “threat” to the UK, according to reports in the Guardian newspaper.

Both he and the other candidate, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, have called the Asian country a “threat,” which they have referred to with “forcefulness.” The two are scheduled to face each other this Monday at 21.00 in a televised debate.

Sunak has promised, in fact, that if elected prime minister he will “stop Chinese influence, especially in universities” and grant British companies and public institutions the “cyber protection they need.”

He has also assured that he will work with leaders such as US President Joe Biden to “transform the resilience of the West in the face of the threat posed by China.”

The Truss campaign, for its part, has insisted that the minister has managed precisely “to strengthen the British position against Beijing and has helped the world to respond to the growing Chinese aggression”, something she has promised to continue to do “if elected”.
