Political censorship in the West has been compared to that of Maoist China by exiled Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Weiwei had recently canceled an exhibition in London following comments on social media about the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
His now-deleted post suggested that the ” guilt surrounding the persecution of the Jewish people” against the Arab world was being used. He also argued that the Jewish community had a significant influence on media, finance and culture in the US.
“You know, society becomes so timid, to really avoid any kind of questions or arguments,” the artist to Sky News. “So basically I was talking on Twitter, just answering someone’s question. Normally you can talk, or whatever you want. You can joke, you can have fun, you can, you know, just give your opinion. But today I see so many people by giving their basic opinion, they get dismissed, they get censored.”
“I grew up within this heavy political censorship, he continued. “I realize now, today in the West, that you are doing exactly the same thing.”
“In universities or in the political sector – everywhere – you can’t talk about the truth.”
Ai believes that even artists in the West are too focused on the pursuit of fame and money. He says he never regrets speaking out, even though he had to leave his home state because of criticism of the Chinese government in his art.
Do you think we have too much censorship in the West?
