More than $1 billion of the film’s box office was earned from 3D screenings, meaning that roughly half of those who ventured into theaters to enjoy the film had a preference for this format. In addition, The Way of Water last week became the second highest grossing IMAX film in history, with $227 million gross from the format surpassed only by its predecessor Avatar.

Not only is The Way of Water the highest-grossing film of 2022, it’s also the highest-grossing film of this year’s Best Picture Oscar nominees. The film is also nominated for Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design and Best Sound. The 95th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on 12 March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. It remains to be seen how many awards the film can take home, after the original Avatar won three out of nine nominations in 2010.
