Australia continues social media ban on children -.

We recently reported that Australia planned to vote on a bill that could limit social media use to people over the age of 16. This bill was introduced in an effort to limit the screen time and content that young children are exposed to online.

Now, according to a report from Reuters, it is official and the bill has passed the Australian Senate. Instagram, X, Snapchat and others will face the ban, but YouTube will be safe, thanks to the fact that it is widely used in educational classrooms.

A Meta spokesperson said that while they will accept the Australian law, they believe the bill was rushed through while the Australian Senate failed to pass it “properly consider the evidence, what the industry is already doing to ensure age-appropriate experiences, and the voices of young people.”

“These are boomers trying to tell young people how the Internet should work to make themselves feel better.” said a Green Party senator. On the other hand, an anti-bullying advocate believes this is a starting point to give parents back control over the content their child sees.
