At least 21 dead in shootings at entertainment venues in South Africa in recent hours

At least 18 people have been killed in two shootings that occurred last night and early this morning at entertainment venues in South Africa, fourteen of them in a single incident, the National Police has reported.

The fourteen dead have been identified in a shooting at Nomzamo Park tavern in the Soweto area, just outside Johannesburg, where nine other people have been injured.

Four other people have died and eight others are in critical condition after another shooting in Pietermartizburg in KwaZulu-Natal state, Police officer Nonhlanhla Kubeka has confirmed to News24.

Both incidents are under investigation.

Shootings in the country’s bars have become a particularly worrying phenomenon for South African authorities following the death of 26 people in the Eastern Cape on June 26.
