At least 20 people have been killed and two injured on Thursday afternoon in a traffic accident on a road near Taru town in Kwale County, southern Kenya.
At 18.00 hours (local time) a minibus heading to the city of Mombasa has collided head-on with a trailer traveling in the opposite direction, as reported by police authorities and has collected the Kenyan newspaper ‘Standard Media’.
The bodies of the dead, including those of two children, were taken to the Kinango sub-county hospital morgue. The two injured persons, meanwhile, are being treated at a hospital in Mariakani Sub County.
Although the reason for the accident is not yet clear, Kinango Police Chief Fredrick Ombaka has indicated that the bus was carrying excess passengers.
“The preliminary incident report indicates that this tragedy and senseless loss of life could have been avoided if the driver of the minibus had maintained lane discipline,” Police said in a statement carried by KBC.
