A marvel of a telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope recently gave us a new and incredibly detailed view of distant space. In that image, eagle-eyed space enthusiasts spotted what appeared to be a question mark.
It is currently unclear what the question mark might be. My personal theory is that the universe is just really wondering what on earth is going on on planet Earth, but people more informed than this humble editor have some better ideas. “It’s probably a distant galaxy, or possibly interacting galaxies (their interactions may have caused the distorted question mark shape),” representatives from the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore told Space.com.
“This may be the first time we’ve seen this particular object,” he said. added the STScI. “Additional follow-up would be needed to find out with some certainty what it is. Webb is showing us many new, distant galaxies – so there is still a lot of new science to do!”
What do you think the mysterious question mark might be?
