Earthquake of magnitude 5.4 declared in southern Peru

An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 has been recorded this Tuesday near the coast in southern Peru, the Geophysical Institute of Peru has made known.

The tremor took place 41 kilometers west of the city of Omate, in the department of Moquegua, and 48 kilometers east of Arequipa. In addition, it has had a depth of 18 kilometers.

Likewise, authorities have indicated that despite the proximity of this earthquake to the coast, the characteristics of the earthquake do not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami.

The local authorities of the Peruvian National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) have not reported for the moment any personal or material damages due to the earthquake, reported ‘El Comercio’.

Peru is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a zone of high activity that registers approximately 85 percent of the world’s seismic activity.
