I use a fan in the winter – sounds completely stupid, but it’s not!

There is a simple reason why I use this fan.

It’s maybe five degrees outside, the sky is gray, you’ve turned up the heating, you’re sitting comfortably on the sofa in the evening and you’re still freezing. Your feet are cold, your back feels drafty, but if you stand up and reach your hand towards the ceiling, it suddenly feels cozy and warm upstairs. That’s exactly where you start to ponder. Turn up the heating? Pay even more? Nobody would think of turning on a fan. I thought so too. Until I realized that a good fan makes an incredible amount of sense, especially in the cold season.

Why a fan is logical in winter

The whole thing has less to do with magic and more to do with a simple principle from physics class that was probably ignored back then. Warm air always rises. So when you turn up your heating, the heat goes straight towards the ceiling. It collects there while you sit downstairs and wonder why it still doesn’t get really warm.

Without a fan, the following happens: You keep turning up the heat because you want to be comfortable downstairs. The warm air above is happy and becomes even warmer – but you only notice half of it below. The energy literally evaporates.

You can eliminate exactly this effect with a fan. The fan ensures that the Air in the room is constantly moving. The warm air from above is pushed down, the cooler air from below rises. The result is one uniform temperature throughout the room. So you have to heat less. The room feels warmer more quickly, the heat remains more evenly distributed and in the end you even save on heating costs.

When even the fan heater suddenly becomes useful

By the way, the whole thing works not only with classic heaters, but also with fan heaters. Here it makes even more sense, because normally it goes like this: fan heater on, brutal heat on your face for five seconds, then the warm air is gone and you’re sitting in the cold again. With a fan in the room, this no longer happens. The warm air is distributed instead of grilling you head on like a hairdryer and then disappearing.
