According to Google, Samsung, Meta and Apple, AR glasses are the next big thing. I’ve been working on everything that has to do with AR, MR or VR for a few years now and I would even agree with the companies.

However, such a Vision Pro is, firstly, very expensive and, secondly, not real AR glasses. On Amazon, however, you can get real AR glasses in a form factor that is much more suitable for everyday use and at a much lower price. How about I tell you that this price has just been reduced by another 110 euros?

Xreal is not nearly as well known as Meta or Apple, so there are few new Xreal products in the news and hardware videos. That’s a shame, because the company has been implementing AR quite creatively for years.

Current gem in the product range: The Xreal One Pro AR. Sunglasses that aren’t even ugly on the outside, but high-tech on the inside.

At a glance, the Xreal One Pro AR glasses are almost indistinguishable from sunglasses. However, upon closer inspection, the displays are noticeable.

But why should the expensive Apple Vision Pro suddenly be worse than the Xreal One Pro? Apple’s glasses are often described as AR glasses, but that’s not entirely true. It is a VR headset that displays mixed reality most of the time. So many abbreviations with R at the end, help!

With virtual reality, you put on glasses that completely isolate you from the environment and replace them with computer-calculated graphics. With mixed reality, the real environment is incorporated into this VR image thanks to multiple cameras in the glasses and then enriched with virtual content.

Augmented reality is what AR is all about, but it is completely different and technically much more difficult to implement: With AR you see the real environment instead of a camera image. But still enriched with computer-generated content.

The Apple Vision Pro, on the other hand, is just a simple pair of VR glasses with, admittedly, really good image quality and a focus on mixed reality.

And now we’re finally at the point where it becomes understandable why Xreal is even ahead of Apple’s Vision Pro and the Samsung Galaxy XR: The latter two are just VR glasses in disguise, the image of the outside world can be seen as a camera image. Less than in Meta Quest 3 but just noticeable.

Much cheaper than Apple Vision Pro and now even on offer: Xreal One Pro

170 inch display on the Steam Deck and even on buses and trains

The Xreal One Pro can be connected to many devices: You can pair your smartphone with Android or iOS, but Xreal also offers an external computing unit that replaces the cell phone. Or you connect the One Pro to the Steam Deck or another handheld. With a laptop, PC or any other output source.

Sometimes an adapter is necessary, which you can of course also find on Amazon.

Handhelds like this from Asus but also Steam Deck and co can easily be connected to the Xreal One Pro as an image source - and you can play in the cinema, no matter where you are.

Inside the glasses, the content is then displayed on a gigantic virtual display: 171 inch diagonals can be achieved, of course smoothly at 120 Hz. By the way, the displays on the Xreal One Pro come from Sony; they are tiny OLEDs.

Since a good image also depends on physical factors such as individual eye relief, the Xreal One Pro is available in two versions: One for an eye relief of 57 to 66 mm (this is probably where most users lie) and one for 66 to 75 mm. Make sure you choose the right version when buying!

You can then play games or watch films on this large screen, which floats in front of you or can be placed virtually in one place. without breaking through the wall in the living room, because otherwise a 170″ TV definitely won’t fit in.

Oh yes, headphones and cameras are of course also built in, so you can also listen to music and take photos/videos.

Xreal One Pro can still be expanded

Optional extensions, it sounds as if the Xreal One Pro is still in the price range of the Apple Vision Pro? No, it’s not that bad. If you want to use AR more flexibly, I would recommend buying the Xreal Eye.

This is a small camera that can be attached to the glasses. It provides spatial tracking so that you can even walk around a virtual monitor. A feature that Apple has also integrated into the Vision Pro.

Bose speakers are hidden in the temples of the glasses and cameras are also installed somewhere.

Xreal Beam Pro is also interesting, although it is actually a smartphone but is used exclusively as a player for AR glasses.

Of course, you can also use the Xreal One Pro without all the accessories. Even without trying out the AR capabilities. Simply as a huge everywhere display with great image quality. Hotel stays and train journeys suddenly become much more relaxed.

You notice: With these inconspicuous glasses – which also look much more modern than the new Meta Ray Bay display and offer a larger field of vision at 57 degrees – you are treating yourself to a tech luxury that many others don’t even know exists.

Off to augmented reality with you, it costs less than you might think
