This gadget has given me back the desire to read and that makes me very happy

In the last few months I’ve only realized how much I missed reading exciting novels on a regular basis. Fault? An eBook reader, of all things.

Somehow books were always around me in my life. With a bookseller sister, a bookworm mother and an internship at the local library, perhaps no wonder. For years I browsed through pretty much everything from Pratchett to Adams, from Tolkien to Heinlein. And then suddenly it stopped.

Why? No idea. Family, work, lack of concentration, take your pick. But I know why I’m now reading one or two books a week again: it’s Amazon’s fault with the Kindle Paperwhite. And I wouldn’t have believed you if you had told me a year ago.

If you’re expecting a deal here, you’ve already guessed correctly. The Kindle Paperwhite is currently available very cheaply on Amazon. And the thing is really good: light, long-lasting (if you read less, you can last for several weeks on one battery charge) and, above all, an island in the hectic online world. Full concentration on the bookno incoming messages, horror alerts or advertising calls.

Where a smartphone display reflects and shines, the book on the eBook reader is matt and rather discreetly illuminated. This makes reading much more comfortable than expected.

In my opinion, Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite is more than worth the money. But it’s not just because the technology works so convincingly inconspicuously, the 7-inch Kindle offers enough screen space and the ePaper technology allows for fatigue-free reading.

Ok, maybe that’s why, they are definitely valid arguments for buying and then using it. I just saw it completely differently when my wife handed me one of these things and said, almost conspiratorially, that I should try it out. I, of all people, the tech nerd, am recommended technology instead of pressed trees. Are you crazy?

In my parents’ house there seemed to be more bookshelves than other furniture, and both shelves and remaining furniture were usually well-stocked with books of all genres. As a child I tuned out the stupid world with Astrid Lindgren and Tolkien, as a teenager with Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, Tad Williams and Isaak Asimov.

I confess: Really printed books are now too bulky for me. Thanks to 16 gigabytes of storage and WiFi, I always have enough reading material with me wherever I go on the Kindle.

And as an adult? It became less and less, everyday life, you know it. Every now and then I would steal a book in the bathtub or on train rides, only to somehow have a smartphone in sight and frantically look at it whenever I was distracted.

Then there was my wife and the Kindle and I shook my head and gave them a chance. Fortunately! Listen to your partner more often, you didn’t choose them for nothing.

In addition, a little courage to try it with a previously unknown author and the persistence to try it again with another author unknown to me after this poorly written failure.

Endless reading material, always with you and without distraction

I’ve finished the classics, and thanks to Kindle Unlimited it’s now the next generation’s turn

There are tons of books by Heinlein, Asimov and Dick around here. Now the young sci-fi talent was allowed to show what they can do. Turns out: A lot! And the fun of reading through the books by Thariot or Joshua Tree was there straight away. I confess: Without a Kindle subscription, I would never have spontaneously tried many of these books.

Even if you don’t like reading, you should know the works of Philip K. Dick. Blade Runner, anyone?

The library from back then is still there and they still lend out great books. But if I drop the Kindle in the bathtub, it still works. There are no distractions like reading on a smartphone or tablet. So beautiful!

The Kindle Paperwhite is so handy that it can always find a place in a bag. It fits well in the hand and has a convincing control system implemented, is easy to read both in the sunshine and at night and the ePaper doesn’t tire the eyes any more than real paper books.

The only downer and the Kindle can’t do anything about it: nasty cliffhangers

The only thing I find really nasty is the cliffhanger at the end The last ark by Joshua Tree including the announcement that we will have to wait until mid-December for the second volume. What does this tree allow itself? That requires punishment. The best way is to pre-order the second volume. Maybe I’ll just listen to the audio book to annoy myself again.

I was completely unfamiliar with Joshua Tree before my Kindle obsession, but now I’m a fan of his entertaining science fiction.
