A new screen technology should make it possible

Even thinner than before? LG makes it possible.

Even thinner than before? LG makes it possible.

The new iPad Pro models are expected to be thinner from 2024. This is made possible by a new OLED screen technology from LG, which the company is developing for Apple, according to the Elec. The technology should combine the advantages of strict and flexible OLED screens.

iPad Pro gets ultradünnes Glas

Strict OLED screens use two fairly thick layers of glass to protect each intervening layer of the OLED panel from air and water.

With flexible OLED screens, the top of the two layers of glass is applied using Thin-Film Encapsulation (TFE), making the second layer of glass thinner. The result is an extremely thin layer of glass that can break very easily.

The 11-inch version of the iPad Pro 2022 is 5.9 mm thick. The iPad Pro 2024 could only be 5.6 mm thick with similar dimensions.

Conventional glass layers are 0.5 mm thick. However, the layer applied by TFE is only 0.2 mm. Through this the thickness is reduced of the entire OLED panel by about 0.3 mm.

Why does Apple optimize the thickness of the glass layer?

The individual inner layers of an OLED screen are between 0.7 nm and 200 nm thick, while the top glass layer is 0.5 to 1.1 millimeters thick. A millimeter is 100,000 nanometers. The glass layer can therefore be optimized the most.
