Despite its incredible popularity, the U.S. has always had a problem with TikTok. The app has faced multiple threats of being banned in the country, with most of these threats coming from the ties between TikTok and China.

In particular, U.S. senators and lawmakers believe TikTok’s data is being harvested by China. In a week, TikTok’s CEO will appear before Congress, but now the US is threatening to ban the app unless the owners agree to sell their interests.

TikTok does not believe this forced sale will automatically mean better data protection for American users and has promised to spend $1.5 billion on a program to protect American user data and content from Chinese government access.

According to the Wall Street Journal’s U.S. sources, a solution to this may be months away, but it appears that the U.S. remains hostile to the idea of the app taking data from its citizens and providing it to China.
