What convinced James Cameron to cast Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic: the detail that made the difference

According to director James Cameron, Leonardo DiCaprio would have been offered the role in Titanic even before the audition actually began. You’ll soon see why.

James Cameron is known for his impressive, action-packed films, and Titanic is among his most iconic works.

The Terminator, Aliens and Avatar are also on this list. The sequel Avatar: The Way of Water will open in cinemas on 16 December, while a third of his planned five blue creature films is already nearing completion.

About Leonardo DiCaprio’s audition in Titanic, James Cameron recalled that while waiting for the actor to arrive, he looked around and noticed that almost all the women who worked in his office were in the room, even the accountant.

“The meeting was amusing. (…) I looked around and all the women in the office were there, under various pretexts. For example, it’s normal for a woman executive producer to be there. What about our accountant? Why was she there? They just wanted to meet Leo, it was hysterical. I looked around and said, ‘I think I already know the answer to that question,'” recalled James Cameron, amused by the situation.

Although it’s been 25 years since the release of Titanic, it seems Leonardo DiCaprio still holds quite a bit of sway in Hollywood.

In fact, Christian Bale recently thanked the actor for turning down certain roles so that he could take them later on, so that he could get to show what he could do.

Known for his habit of establishing long-term relationships with big-name filmmakers, DiCaprio has worked with directors such as Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Baz Luhrmann over the years.

In truth, Titanic would look a lot different today if the role of Jack had been played by a different actor.
