Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 782G. Looks to be a new revision of the 778G

Qualcomm has just announced its new high-end chipset, but along with it comes a new mid-range one that we’re sure to find in many of next year’s smartphones. The Snapdragon 782G is a model that will replace the Snapdragon 778G+, which has been very popular in phones in the €400-500 price range over the past year, in the offering. It uses a similar configuration but offers higher frequencies. The performance gain, however, is minor.

Snapdragon 782G comes with minor improvements over previous models

The new Snapdragon 782G is built on the same 6nm architecture and with similar cores, so we won’t see more than 5% more performance for the CPU and about 10% for the GPU. The processor integrates a high-performance Cortex-A78 core at 2.7GHz (up from 2.5GHz on the 778G+), three more Cortex-A78 cores at 2.2GHz, along with four efficient Cortex-A55 cores at 1.9GHz. On the GPU side we’re dealing with Adreno 642L.

The advantages of this model are the technologies it integrates, such as QuickCharge 4+ that can charge the phone to 50% in 15 minutes, the integration of an AI accelerator for fast photo processing, and the Spectra ISP image processor with support for three 14-bit colour cameras, which also allows the integration of 200-megapixel cameras. Thus, we may see mid-range phones with Samsung’s new sensors, which debuted on phones in the high-end performance range this year.

The Snapdragon X53 modem is compatible with sub-6GHz networks as well as mmWave, with speeds of up to 3.7 Gbps download and 1.6 Gbps upload. It also offers support for Wi-Fi 6 networks, as well as Bluetooth 5.2. But we don’t see support for Wi-Fi 6E or 7, or even Bluetooth 5.2, as we’ve seen on more powerful processors.

The new Honor 80, which should be announced today, could be the first phone to integrate this processor.
