Elon Musk has unblocked Donald Trump’s Twitter account

Elon Musk’s big reason for buying Twitter was mainly to stem the tide of blocked accounts of famous people like Donald Trump. Less than a month after taking over the company, the billionaire conducted a public vote on the platform, and following the results, he followed through on his promise and unblocked the former US president’s account.

The vote, which was active for 24 hours, drew many votes, more than 10 million, among Twitter users. The final score was 52% for unblocking Donald Trump’s account and 48% for keeping the account blocked. Musk considered this to be “the voice of the people” and offered the account back to Donald Trump accordingly. The former US president has yet to have a reaction to the decision, but we expect him to return to Twitter again as he has announced his candidacy in the next US presidential election.

Trump’s Twitter account was blocked for nearly two years following the assault on the Capitol building in Washington DC. A crowd of Trump supporters occupied the building demanding a recount of votes from the November 2020 election. The gathering was based on Trump’s claims that his votes were stolen. In the aftermath, several people died, and Trump did not ask his supporters until many hours later to stop demonstrating.

All major social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, blocked Trump for posts inciting violence at the time. Elon Musk, before taking over Twitter, promised that he would make a board to make decisions in blocking or unblocking accounts of prominent people and that he would not make decisions before that board was convened. Given the chaos at Twitter, especially after many of the platform’s key employees resigned this week, Musk appears to be making decisions on his own after the fact.

Prior to Trump’s unblocking, Musk also unblocked other blocked accounts, such as Jordan Peterson’s.
