Galaxy S23 could ship with a faster version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

According to an unofficial benchmark that appeared in the Geekbench catalog, the Galaxy S23 will use a slightly faster version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset than the competition, with Samsung enjoying preferential treatment from vendor Qualcomm.

Although all sources indicate that Samsung has dropped the Exynos chipset for the Galaxy S23 series, it would appear that the South Korean manufacturer has managed to turn that into a double advantage. On the one hand, the geographic differentiation of Galaxy versions is eliminated, from which many users ended up feeling unfair, receiving a version of the phone they considered inferior. But more than that, Samsung’s greater prominence from its role as a customer for Qualcomm would have ensured it preferential treatment in terms of good access to more successful copies of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

According to evidence appearing in the Geekbench catalog, that at least the European version of the Galaxy S23, codenamed SM-S918B,uses a version of the chipset with increased operating frequencies.

Thus, the Galaxy S23 can boast a single-core score of 1530 points and 4779 points in the multi-core test.

Specifically Samsung’s version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset comes with the high-performance Cortex-X3 core clocked at a frequency of 3.36 GHz, slightly above the standard 3.2 GHz. While the advantage isn’t big enough to be noticeable in normal use of the device, the difference could be enough to position the new Galaxy flagship at the top of the performance charts.

It’s unlikely that Samsung invested in developing a custom-designed chipset for this result, as Google is doing with the Tensor G2 solution used with the Pixel 7 series of phones. Rather, it’s a matter of selecting the most successful examples of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which Qualcomm preferentially ships to Samsung.
