Sony announces a7R V, a full-frame camera with 61 megapixel sensor and 8K shooting

Sony has announced its new high-resolution camera, the Alpha 7R V (a7R V), the highest resolution camera in the company’s portfolio. It comes with a 61-megapixel full-frame sensor and promises vastly improved focusing, thanks to the use of AI algorithms to recognise subjects and track them better in the frame, whether capturing stills or video.

Unlike other models, the Sony a7R V is primarily a professional camera for photographers

The a7R V comes with several firsts for Sony mirrorless cameras. On the one hand we have AI focusing, then the 61 megapixel sensor, but also an optical and in-body stabilisation that can reach up to 8 stops of stabilisation. This means that both stills and movies will benefit from stabilisation. Some of the best performing cameras on the market boast 6 or 6.5 stops of stabilisation. The camera also boasts a 15-stop dynamic range sensor for capturing detail in any lighting situation, both in shadows and bright areas.

The camera allows real-time tracking, fast focusing up to 10 frames per second, silent shooting up to 7 frames per second and compressed RAW burst up to 583 successive shots. Sony’s BIONZ XR image processor can quickly process JPEG images despite the high resolution. It is also responsible for fast calculation of settings on automatic or assisted modes.

Of course, it also has advanced video functions

When it comes to video capture, the Sony a7R V is one of the few cameras on the market that also boasts 8K resolution shooting at 24 or 25 frames per second. Of course, the camera also allows 6.2K or 4K high quality shooting, with HVEC (H.265) codec and 4:2:2 10-bit colour format.

The camera is also equipped with a 9.44-million-dot LCD screen that can be tilted, slots for CFexpress Type A and SDXC cards, Wi-Fi 5 2×2 MIMO, 10Gbps USB connection, and the ability to connect the camera to a PC in “webcam” mode for shooting or live streaming in 4K.

Of course, the new Sony a7R V is dedicated to professionals and priced accordingly. The camera will be on offer in specialist stores in November, priced at 22,000 lei in Romania.
