Bavarian Prime Minister warns of a possible resurgence of the far right due to the energy crisis

The prime minister of the German region of Bavaria, Markus Soeder, has warned of a possible resurgence of far-right extremism due to the energy crisis resulting from the war in Ukraine.

In an interview with the ‘Bild’ newspaper, Soeder, once a serious candidate for the German Chancellorship, stressed that “fear and uncertainty feed extremism.”

“The mixture of crises can lead to a destabilization of democracy,” Soeder has explained.

The minister recalled, in this regard, the growth experienced by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the state of Lower Saxony, in the north, as well as in parts of the east of the country.
