Ukraine denounces new shelling in Mikolaev in the south of the country

Follow live the latest news on the war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian authorities have reported early this morning shelling in the town of Mikolaev, located in the south of the country.

The mayor of the city, Alexander Senkevich, has communicated Thursday that Mikolaev has been “massively” attacked by Russian troops, without specifying for the moment a balance of victims.

“After the first night, they have massively shelled Mikolaev. A five-storey residential building has been attacked,” Senkevich explained in a message on his official Telegram profile, after he had given midnight warning of air alarms for citizens to take shelter.

“The two upper floors have been completely destroyed; the rest, under the rubble,” the mayor has detailed. The emergency services are at the site of the bombing to proceed with the rescue work, as Senkevich explained.

In recent days, Russia has taken a change of strategy in the war in Ukraine, so that it is focusing attacks on civilian areas and infrastructure. Moscow has taken this step in retaliation for an explosion on Saturday that damaged the strategic Kerch Bridge, which links Russia and the annexed Crimean peninsula.
