Charles III will be crowned King of England on May 6, 2023.

Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday that the coronation of King Charles III of England will take place next May 6, 2023 at Westminster Abbey in London, in a historic ceremony in which Camilla will also be designated queen consort, although in an event with less pomp and pageantry.

Charles III acceded to the throne now a month ago after the long reign of his mother Elizabeth II. The new monarch will be crowned at the age of 74 and will thus become the latest coronation in the history of this monarchy, as well as the first in almost 70 years.

Buckingham has reported that the symbolic ceremony will combine “deep-rooted” traditions “of long standing” while “reflecting the role of the monarch today” with a look “to the future.”

The anointing will be presided over and blessed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and is not expected to drag on for nearly three hours as Elizabeth II’s did, nor have such a large guest list, royal sources have told the BBC.

The coronation date will also coincide with the fourth birthday of her great-grandson Archie, son of her grandson Henry and Meghan Marckle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
