First details on Snapdragon 7 Gen 2, Qualcomm’s next chipset for mid-range phones

The replacement for Qualcomm’s 700 series of chipsets, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 has appeared on just a few phone models, and we’re already learning about its Gen 2 successor.

Identified by the codename SM7475, this could be the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 or just the 7+ Gen 1 edition of the just-released solution. According to information provided by a well-known rumor source, Roland Quandt, the new Qualcomm chipset comes in an octa-core formulation with one Prime core, three Gold cores and another four Silver cores optimized for efficient battery usage.

Frequencies are expected to be 2.4GHz for the Prime core and almost as much for the three Gold cores, with the latter using the latter but offering lower performance. Accommodating less intensive tasks, such as Android background processing, the Silver cores will run at 1.8GHz. Judging by the virtually identical frequencies of the Gen 1 series, the variant in this would be a different version of the already released chipset seems unlikely. Instead, the variant of a Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 with identical frequencies but different architecture seems much more credible.

Unfortunately, for concrete details about the hardware configuration we’ll have to wait for further revelations. In the meantime, we can speculate on the types of cores. Announced by Qualcomm this summer, these could be Cortex-A715 and Cortex-A510 for the Gold-Silver cores, possibly Cortex-X3 for the Prime core. By comparison, the A715 core would be 5% faster and 20% more efficient than the Cortex-A710 solution used with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.
