Mexico registers strong 6.9 magnitude aftershock after Monday’s earthquake in Michoacán

An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 on the open Richter scale has shaken western Mexico on Thursday, just days after an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 with epicenter in Michoacan, as reported by the National Seismological Service, which has pointed out that it could be an aftershock.

The agency has pointed out in its account on the social network Twitter that the epicenter has been located 84 kilometers south of Coalcoman, in Michoacan, with the hypocenter located twelve kilometers deep. “As of 2:00 a.m. (local time) on September 22, 1,229 aftershocks of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Michoacan on September 19 have been recorded,” it has added.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has indicated that “so far there is no report of damage.” “We had an aftershock of the earthquake with magnitude 6.9 with epicenter in Coalcomán. It was felt in Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, Guerrero and Mexico City,” he said.

Following this, Mexico City authorities have announced the activation of the seismic alert and asked the population to “evacuate and take shelter in a safe place.” “Follow the instructions of Civil Protection personnel and emergency services in the area,” they said via Twitter.

For its part, the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City has pointed out that “after the activation of the seismic alert, a woman lost her life after hitting her head after falling from the stairs of her home, in the Doctores neighborhood,” while in the Education neighborhood a man has died “from a heart attack.”

Monday’s earthquake, which left at least two dead, coincided with the double anniversary of the earthquakes that struck the country on September 19, 1985 and 2017, which killed around 6,000 and 369 people, respectively.
