The Russian government has defended Tuesday that the situation around Taiwan is “a purely internal matter” of China and stressed that Beijing “has the right to take the necessary measures to protect its sovereignty” on the island.
“Relations between the parties in the Taiwan Strait is a purely internal affair of China, which has the right to take the necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity around the Taiwan issue,” the Russian Foreign Ministry has said, Russian news agency TASS has reported.
Moscow’s statements have come just days after the U.S. State Department approved the sale of an arms package valued at 1.1 billion euros destined for Taiwan, amid rising tensions in the area in recent weeks.
In response, the Taiwanese Defense Ministry expressed its gratitude to Joe Biden’s Administration for the announcement, which calls for the delivery of weapons worth 1 billion euros, while the Chinese Embassy in Washington called on the United States to revoke the arms sale because it “jeopardizes” the two countries’ relationship.
