Iran calls on US to withdraw its “excessive demands” to revive 2015 nuclear deal

The Iranian government has demanded Tuesday that the United States withdraw its “excessive demands” in the face of the reactivation of the 2015 nuclear agreement, which suffered a severe blow in 2018 when the then US president, Donald Trump, announced the unilateral withdrawal of the American country from the historic pact.

“The other party must withdraw its excessive demands,” said Iranian Executive spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi, who stressed that “Iran has not abandoned and will not abandon the talks” aimed at achieving this reactivation, as reported by the Iranian news agency Tasnim.

In this regard, he stressed that during the last few days, “a constructive path” has been taken regarding the withdrawal of the sanctions imposed on Tehran by the United States since 2018, although he reiterated the need for Washington to present guarantees and verification processes to ensure that they will not be applied again.

Jahromi’s words came a day after the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Policy and Common Security, Josep Borrell, warned that Iran’s response to the European proposal to return to the nuclear deal, by demanding more guarantees and the closure of research into its nuclear activity, does not help to resume the pact, before stressing that the “process is in danger.”

Tehran has assured in recent days that it needs “stronger guarantees” from Washington for the reactivation of the 2015 nuclear agreement and that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) “should focus solely on its duties and responsibilities.” Meanwhile, the United States has rejected these requests by labeling the response as “not constructive” and has advanced that the U.S. side will formulate its own response.
