Twenty killed in floods in eastern Afghanistan

At least twenty people have been killed and 30 injured in Afghanistan’s eastern Logar province as a result of flooding caused by torrential rains on Saturday, the province’s Taliban spokesman, Omar Mansur, has said.

According to Taliban officials, the floods caused by the storms have affected the eastern provinces of Paktia and Jost, leaving significant destruction in their wake, as reported by Jaama news agency.

The press office of the Logar Security Department has stressed in a statement, picked up by Tolo News, that efforts are continuing to save the victims of the flooding, which has affected at least 3,000 houses.

Afghanistan’s Meteorological Department has declared a state of emergency in ten provinces of the country, local media reported Sunday.

Figures from the Taliban government’s Ministry of Disaster Management indicate that at least 180 people have been killed and more than 200 injured as a result of natural calamities over the past week in several regions of Afghanistan.

Also, the spokesman for the Ministry for Natural Disaster Management, Sharaf al Din Muslim, said at a press conference on Saturday that in the past year more than 1,500 people have died and more than 3,000 people have been injured as a result of natural disasters.
