Some 12,000 people evacuated after World War II bomb found in Berlin

The discovery of a World War II bomb has forced the establishment of an exclusion zone of about 500 meters in Berlin, which according to the Police affects about 12,000 people.

The device was located during construction work in the Friedrichshain district. The authorities have mobilized to deactivate it and avoid risks, but initially ordered the population to leave the area.

“There could be up to 12,000 people in the exclusion zone and it will take time,” a police spokeswoman explained. The evacuees have the possibility to move to the Mercedes-Benz Arena, which has been set up as a temporary shelter.
