Only with a fan I didn’t get the heat in my apartment.
I live in the attic of a two-story old building house. These apartments are cheaper in my region, but there is a big problem: in summer they heat up strongly.
This means that it is even warmer in the early afternoon than outside. If it has 26 to 28 degrees outside, I get 28 to 30 degrees on the same days. In the evening it takes longer for the temperatures to fall, which leads to problems when falling asleep.
I work for several hours in the home office every day. In my free time, I also like to spend the evenings when playing on the PC or PS5. I spend a lot of time in my apartment that I would like to use at a pleasant temperature.
Fans and co.: I tried these solutions
In order to make everyday life more comfortable in the home office with regard to the heat, I made myself smart on the Internet for several months and tried various options – from small fans to a mobile air conditioner.
My goal was to create a pleasant indoor climate as cost -effective as possible. I would like to share the experiences I have had with you so that you don’t have to invest the same amount of time and money.
My findings at a glance
- Pleating and privacy foils on the windows help to keep sunlight and heat outside.
- In order to keep the room temperatures low, fans are not the means of choice.
- If a permanently installed split air conditioning system is not an option, mobile air conditioners can be an alternative.
- A cold foot bath can also work wonders.
Passive methods against the heat
At first I tried to fix the problem at the source: the sun. My old building windows have no blinds and I am not a fan of curtains (my cats, on the other hand). So I chose honeycomb -shaped pleated blinds in the living room.
They are easy to install on the windows and have a big impact. The sunlight stays outside and thus less heat comes through the windows into my apartment.
Sicked by the cat: the pleated blind in my apartment.
However, my office only has an inclined window and the installation that works wonderfully in the living room did not last very well. So here I tried pleated blinds with suction cups.
Unfortunately, I didn’t find any with a honeycomb shape for this installation method. The effect is correspondingly lower. To support, I glued a reflective anti-UV film to the outer glass. This ensures that you look like sunglasses through these windows.
Together with the suction cup pleated blind, the dark effect was good. But in both rooms it could not be prevented that the air in the room in the room in the room could not prevent stuffy and hot.
With fans on the wrong track
Keeping the warmth outside was not enough. The room needed active cooling
I tried it very simply with a simple table fan. It was left out of my previous flat share, which is why I didn’t have to spend money on it.
For the sake of completeness, I mention the Dyson TP02 Pure Cool Link Air purifier. When I saw the first Dyson devices in their stylish and innovative design several years ago, they fascinated me.
After two weeks I have already returned my order. Because the name promises cooling, but in the end you can’t get closer to the goal of real cooling.
Because: At the room temperature, a fan changes absolutely nothing.

It creates a draft that has a cooling effect on the skin due to the movement. This ensures that you don’t sweat so quickly. As soon as you move out of the draft, you immediately feel the warmth that has accumulated all around.
To stay in the fan train for too long can also have nasty side effects. After a long weekend, which was mainly used for gaming and with the fan at all times at my side, the episodes were two weeks of sore throat and hoarseness.
Large tower fans cover significantly larger areas, Which is useful, for example, if you want to sit on the couch with the family in the evening without the arms and legs sticking to each other during the slightest touch.
So what can you do to actively lower the temperature in the room? Because I wanted to continue spending little money, I first searched for the cheapest options.
Cooling in summer promise various fans with water cooling. These try to imitate correct air conditioning. With a built -in tank for cold water or ice cream, the draft and thus the room temperature should be cooled.
In practice, what sounds quite good in theory only works to a certain point. And that at which the water reaches room temperature. The hotter it is, the faster this point is achieved. From then on, a fan with a water tank hardly differs from one without.
Depending on the size of the tank and the output temperature of the water or ice as well as the inner temperature, this point is reached after 30 minutes to two hours. For someone like me who spends the whole day in the home office, so not a long-term solution.
Climate devices: Not for tenants?
So I decided to bite the acid apple and invest a larger sum of money for a correct air conditioning system.
In my research for good and cheap offers, it turned out very quickly that a permanently installed split air conditioning system could not be implemented. These consist of two parts and are installed on both sides of a house wall.
This leads to several problems: I live to rent, I don’t belong to the apartment or the house. In addition, there is the time and cost of such an installation.
The next best option would be a mobile split air conditioning system. Instead of drilling a hole through a wall, you lead an air hose through a window or the door. But without a balcony or the like, I have no way to safely set up the outer part. What are the possibilities?
You do without the outer part. I bought the AEG Chillflex Pro. This is also a mobile air conditioner with a hose that leads outside. It combines the inner and outer parts of a split device in one unit.
The Chillflex Pro transports the hot air outside with a hose.
In addition, a window seal is required. These are glued to the window frame and have a zipper opening to lead the hose outside. So the warm air can go outwards through the hose, but not inwards.
I am personally very enthusiastic about the AEG Chillflex Pro. I didn’t expect a miracle, but the cooling effect is clearly sensible and measurable. On hot days it cools down my small office from 28 to 24 degrees. Thanks to four wheels that can rotate 360 degrees, the device is also mobile and can be easily pushed through the apartment.
But there are also a few clear disadvantages that you should consider before buying. The AEG device is compact and mobile, but creates a considerable volume. During the evening series watching, the television has to be placed much louder to drown out the blower. In addition, the device must be set up near a window so that the hose can be led to the outside.
The best solution to the heat
You see, there are very versatile solutions for different circumstances. Before you buy something, you should best find out what you need. Get a thermometer and hold on to see how warm it gets in your apartment and at which temperature it remains pleasant for you.
🔴 Water tank fans: The devices with water tank didn’t convince me. The cooling effect decreased too quickly for my taste. If you don’t spend much time at home in summer, but need quick cooling in this short time, you could think about it.
🟡 Table fan: If you are satisfied with the temperature and just want to reduce sweating, a simple table fan can already help for little money.
🟡 Turmventilator: The same applies to tower fans. I found the Dyson model as pleasant for the bedroom. Because once I fell asleep, I usually sleep through the night. But this does not need a device for 400 euros.
🟡 Split air conditioning system: If you really want to cool your apartment all day long, you can’t avoid air conditioning. If your owner of your four walls are, it may even be worth installing a split device.
🟢 Mobile air conditioning: For tenants, I advise one of the variants with exhaust hose through the window. A mobile device may be easily reselled after a move.
🟢 Pleated blinds in a honeycomb form: If you also live under the roof and have to struggle with annoying sunlight on your monitor or television, I recommend pleated shape for your windows.
My insider tip against the heat
If you have made it here, you know about my personal experiences with all kinds of technical aids against the heat.
But I still have an insider tip, and it is super simple, does not use electricity at all and you can now use it at home immediately.
I’m talking about the cold foot bath. Grab a large bucket or any closed container where your feet can be accommodated.
Cold water in the bucket, sit comfortably on the couch or in the armchair and slowly let your feet slide into the bucket. Your entire body cools down in a few seconds and you feel fresh again.
