One of the best commercials I’ve ever seen.
Out with the old and in with the new – that’s the motto of the latest Volkswagen ad. If this sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a sequel to a 2010 VW ad, but with a twist to fit the current narrative of transitioning to electric vehicles.
The old ad, which you can see a bit below, showed an old lady selling her beloved Volkswagen Golf to a teenager. As his father inspected the worn-out vehicle, the video inserted flashbacks of the owner having precarious fun with the car. The ad wanted to boast about the reliability of the VW Golf, despite the wear and tear its owner had put it through.
The new ad, which is embedded at the end of this article, picks up the story from the moment father and son pulled out of the driveway. The actors are different, but you’ll immediately see the connection between the old ad and the new one.
One of the best commercials
Understandably, the lady missed her old Golf. She was sorry she sold the car and even got a tattoo on her arm to commemorate her dear old red hatchback. Then she stumbled across a VW ID.4 GTX in a showroom and decided to take it out for a spin… literally. VW’s slogan “Bring the Power Back” fits the theme quite well.
Obviously, VW wants to promote that you can have fun with its electric cars, especially the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX, as well as those powered by internal combustion engines. Being the high-performance version of German electric vehicles, I’m not surprised by this move.
The VW ID.4 GTX has a two-motor configuration, one on each axle, producing a total of 295 horsepower (220 kilowatts) and 470 Newton-meters of torque. It can sprint to 60 mph from a complete stop in 6.2 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 180 km/h.
