Uber removes the “Split Fare” feature from the app. It promises a better alternative

Uber has announced that it will abandon the so-called “Split Fare” feature, which allows users who travel in the same car to share the costs of automatic transportation, directly in the mobile application. This is a very popular one among users, but Uber believes it can make a better one that better meets customer needs. Thus, the decision to remove it from the application in the next few days seems very strange, especially since a better alternative is promised.

Uber will release Split Fare to replace it with something “better”

According to Mashable, which quotes emails received by Uber users in the UK, the company has already announced this change. Uber plans to remove the Split Fare feature from its mobile app in April, with the announcement of the ability to be removed by March 21st. However, this is a “temporary” measure, according to Uber representatives. They already mention that they are working on a similar improved function, but it will be launched in the “next months”:

“We are in the process of reshaping the way customers can share shipping costs, and the feature will be temporarily removed from the Uber app next month. We know it’s a popular feature, so you don’t have to worry. We plan to release a new and improved version in the coming months. “

With no deadline for launching its replacement, Uber is announcing that for the next few months you will no longer be able to share the cost of automatic transportation with other people, but will have to resort to the “classic” methods: cash, bank transfer, Revolut, and so on

Given that Uber knows that its users prefer this method and is already working on a “better” alternative, the decision to remove the old feature first months before the alternative is ready to launch is at least strange. At the moment, there are no indications that these changes will be applied in all regions simultaneously, so at the moment, the Split Fare function could remain active in Romania, even in April.

Even though Uber was the first ride sharing service in Romania, in 2021, Bolt became the market leader, with expansion in many cities. Bolt also seems to be growing a lot in the field of deliveries, after opening Bolt Food following the closure of Uber Eats in Romania in 2020.
