Production giants have always loved saving tons of promising and exciting films for a summer release, and that’s exactly what we experienced again this year. After a mega June, this July brings an array of promising projects worthy of your attention, across a wide range of genres.
Once again, we based our choices on a UK release calendar, so be sure to check locally for accurate entries and dates. With that out of the way, let’s dive into another installment of Screen Time.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F [Netflix] – July 3
Eddie Murphy’s renaissance has been booming lately with the famous actor returning to many of his most beloved franchises. Next on the line is Beverly Hills Cop, as in this next installment for Netflix Axel Foley returns to his old stomping grounds to investigate a threat aimed at his own daughter. With many former series stars also returning, this film will be a shot of nostalgia.
MaXXXine – July 5
In the third chapter in Ti West’s horror series, MaXXXine, Mia Goth headlines and plays a young adult movie star trying to break through in Hollywood, but is stalked by a killer who targets her demographic. With her life on the line, this killer may also prompt Maxine to reveal long-hidden details about her dark past.
Vikings: Valhalla: Season 3 [Netflix] – July 11
After two seasons of stories in which Leif Erikson, Freydis and Harald Hardrada traveled across Europe 100 years after the events of theVikings main series, the trio’s travels come to an end in July. In the final chapter of this show, the gang aims to defend their honor and stamp their name in Viking legend while dealing with treacherous Viking rivals and Norman kings.
Sausage Party: Foodtopia [Prime Video] – July 11
We’re still scarred and unrecovered after seeing Sausage Party in cinemas in 2016, but this month Prime Video is taking us back to an animated nightmare of foodlessness in the Foodtopia spin-off series. Bringing back most of the original cast and continuing the story set forth by the 2016 film, you can expect more stunningly crazy and gross-out moments in this comedy show.
Long legs – July 12
Horror fans are eating well this summer. Director Oz Perkins will try to scare and upset moviegoers even more in July when the terrifying Longlegs makes its appearance. In this film, she follows an FBI agent, played by Maika Monroe, and is tasked with finding a serial killer by uncovering a series of occult clues.
Despicable Me 4 – July 12
Gru and the Minions make their return to paint summer a very luminous yellow. Despicable Me 4 will pit the former evil genius turned secret agent against a new nemesis, Maxime Le Mal and his girlfriend Valentina, as they overcome the challenges of welcoming and caring for the uncontrollable baby Gru Jr. Expect lots of silly animated jokes in the next chapter of Illumination’s series.
Fly me to the moon – July 12
Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum team up again for this upcoming romcom that follows marketing genius Kelly Jones as she gets launch director Cole Davis in trouble during a very important rocket launch. Davis is tasked with landing a rocket on the moon, while Jones is expected to rig a fake landing in case it fails. You probably know which landing we’re talking about here….
Exploding Kittens [Netflix] – July 12
Netflix is bolstering its animated slate by offering an adaptation of the beloved card game Exploding Kittens. In this show, Tom Ellis lends his voice to Godcat, a feline embodiment and captive of the Almighty, designed as a way to teach the eternal being a lesson for constantly waging war with the devil, who also happens to have turned into a cat…
In a violent nature – July 12
A horror film from a unique perspective. Instead of taking the side of the victim fleeing for his life, In a Violent Nature puts the viewer in the shoes of the killer and documents the various trials they must endure to achieve their goal. Following in the footsteps of the vengeful Johnny, the cruel person in this film tries to recover a locket stolen from his burnt and long-forgotten corpse.
Twisters – July 17
You know it’s a good month for movies when Twisters makes a comeback. In this reboot of the famous series, Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos lead the cast as a collection of storm chasers who risk their lives to test a new and highly experimental weather system. If you like disaster movies, you won’t want to miss this one.
Cobra Kai: Season 6 – Part 1 [Netflix]- July 18
Netflix knows the power it holds these days with the Cobra Kai -series, because instead of opting for a typical full-season debut, the final batch of episodes will be delivered in three parts between July and sometime early next year. In this final season, Daniel LaRusso, Johnny Lawrence and the children of Miyagi-Do will work together to take down the increasingly powerful and unhinged Sensei Kreese and his Cobra Kai henchmen.
Time Bandits [Apple TV+] – July 24
An adaptation of the 1981 film by Terry Gilliam, this Apple TV+ show sees a crew of wacky individuals, centered around a young boy, traveling through time in search of any treasure they can get their hands on. With Taika Waititi attached to the show and Lisa Kudrow starring as one of the leads, you can expect a fantastic time-hopping journey in July.
Deadpool & Wolverine – July 25
The blockbuster of the month, and for many, the biggest movie of the year. Deadpool & Wolverine will not only bring Ryan Reynolds’ mercenary with a mouth and Hugh Jackman’s famous X-Men hero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it will also be the only theatrical offering to come all the way from Marvel Studios in 2024. Expect an adventure of epic proportions with plenty of comedy and exciting cameos.
