In this country, cashless payment at checkouts is not only carried out using NFC-compatible EC cards; apps for smartphones and smartwatches are also a popular method.
This includes the “Google Wallet” app, but according to numerous user reports, it has been causing problems since the beginning of the year. These are triggered at checkouts if the payment service provider PayPal is stored as a payment method in Google Wallet.
- It probably doesn’t matter which payment method is linked to PayPal itself. Users report failed processing regardless of whether a checking account, credit card or even existing credit is used.
- There is also no common denominator among businesses that have problems with Google Wallet payments.
According to reports, various solution methods were unsuccessful. Setting up a new PayPal account within Google Wallet is also not an option.
Only switching to another payment method on the wallet app will result in successful payment.
The “starting day” of the problems can be narrowed down to January 1, 2025. The wallet app is said to have worked smoothly with PayPal on New Year’s Eve. Regular online transactions via PayPal are not affected.

Wallet support: PayPal can’t, Google doesn’t want to
In various forums and comments, affected users are also annoyed that there is no communication from Google about the problem. The chatbots that can be found on the developers’ help pages would not understand the problem and certainly would not have a solution.
Paypal itself at least responds to support requests, but cannot provide any help. Accordingly, the anger of those affected is primarily directed against Google as the wallet provider itself, which is neither available nor actively working on a solution to the problem for the third day in a row.
