Microsoft believes that years from now, not decades, we will see powerful quantum computers -.

Quantum computing is an exciting technology that holds the promise of performing computations that could take our ordinary computers millions of years. We could unlock discoveries in medicine and many other fields, and get answers to some of our biggest questions.

Many scientists would say quantum computers powerful enough to solve our big problems are still decades away, but Microsoft, through its new Majorana 1 chip, believes we could see powerful quantum computers arrive sooner rather than later.

According to the BBC, despite Microsoft’s hopes, experts still believe we are decades away from powerful quantum computing. Nvidia boss Jensen Huang believes it will come in 20 years, but Microsoft’s Chetan Nayak believes we need to change our thinking about quantum computing.

“Many people have said that quantum computing, that is, useful quantum computers, are still decades away.” he said. “I think this takes us into years rather than decades.”
