Introducing the Oscars in the Best Casting category -.

The Oscars are adding a new category for the first time since 2002, when the Best Animated Feature Film category was added. This new category celebrates achievements in casting. Casting directors have been campaigning for years to be recognized, and soon they will get that attention.

The award will not be added to the ceremony until 2026. “As the Academy evolves, we are proud to add casting to the disciplines we recognize and celebrate.” said Bill Kramer, Academy CEO, and Janet Yang, Academy president. “We congratulate our members of the casting directors branch on this exciting milestone and for their commitment and dedication during this process.”

This will make the 24th category in the Oscars, which will likely push the show’s run time even further. Still, according to many filmmakers and viewers, there is work to be done. Stunt work, for example, also needs more recognition. Hopefully we will soon be able to see those who put their bodies on the line for films get the recognition they deserve.
