Huawei has officially confirmed the launch of the next series of high-end smartphones in its portfolio and the first since the “split” from Leica. The Huawei Mate 50 will debut in China very soon and will mark the return of this series to the market after a two-year absence. Last year, the Chinese company did not launch two flagship series as it used to do previously, but only one: Huawei P50, which is still the best performing range it has on sale.
Mate 50 will represent the return of this series after 2 years of absence in the market
The announcement of the launch event for the Mate 50 came rather suddenly and unexpectedly. Mate series phones were traditionally announced around October or November, but Huawei seems to be in a hurry to announce the new models before iPhone 14. Thus, we have an event scheduled for September 6, 2022.
The image showing the event doesn’t give any details about the phone other than a metal ring, which most likely represents the camera system of the new devices. Past Mate models have had the cameras framed in such a large ring on the back. Given that Leica is no longer a partner for these models, however, it will be interesting to see how the company will present its photo capabilities. Huawei is rumored to be using a new proprietary photography brand for branding the cameras on the new phones: the Xmage.
Past rumors suggested that the Huawei Mate 50 and 50 Pro would not be launched with a new chipset, however, but still with the same Snapdragon 888 from last year, equipped only with 4G modem, not 5G capabilities.
Given how long it took after last year’s P50 series announcement to arrive in Europe, we probably won’t see the new Mate 50s on the domestic market until late 2022 either.
