It has been a long and very busy year, but we are now in the final stretch. Before we all head out to bask in holiday cheer and enjoy the holidays with friends and family, we have one last Games To Look For to serve up, specifically looking at the new launches scheduled for December 2023. Granted, it’s a pretty sparse month, so prepare for a pretty short installment to close out the mighty 2023.
SteamWorld Build (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series) – December 1.
The Station has decided it’s time for fans to create their own SteamWorld adventures, and in the spirit of this, the developer has now come up with the idea of SteamWorld Build. This simulation strategy game is all about mining and collecting resources and then using them to upgrade and improve a growing city. With the pressures of managing an ever-growing farm and the dangers lurking deep beneath the surface to worry about, SteamWorld Build puts a new spin on the long-running franchise.
Arizona Sunshine 2 (PC, PS5) – December 7
It’s not often we decide to highlight virtual reality games on Games To Look For, but given the arid nature of December, we thought we’d give Arizona Sunshine 2 some attention. In this sequel to the popular title, this fan favorite comes to PC, PlayStation 5 and Meta Quest VR systems and shoots you through hordes of undead as they thrive in the heat of the desert sun.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader (PC, PS5, Xbox series) – December 7
There are few universes more present in the gaming space than that of Warhammer. Adding to the already plentiful list of Warhammer projects, Owlcat Games serves up a story-rich classic RPG set in the 40,000 era that follows the crew of a giant emptied ship as they search for new opportunities to make quick money in the vast and dangerous regions considered by many to be the inland waters of the Empire.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (PC, PS5, Xbox Series) – Dec. 7
By far the biggest launch of the month, Ubisoft’s Massive has been working with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment for years to give fans an authentic and fresh interactive take on the famous sci-fi universe. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is this creation, a game that seems to take what made Far Cry so popular and then slap a Pandora paint job on it. If you’ve ever wanted to feel what it’s like to be a Na’Vi, this is the game for you.
Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance (PC) – Dec. 7
Skynet just won’t quit. The world is once again threatened by the dangerous Terminator robot army and it is your job to lead the remnants of humanity in their efforts to end the Legion robot army. This RTS is coming exclusively to PC and will feature a single player campaign revolving around a commander in the Founders military force as they are tasked with stopping Legion and foiling its plans, while enjoying multiplayer and skirmish competitive modes.
The day before (PC) – December 7
It may sound highly unnatural, but The Day Before will make its debut as an Early Access project on PC in December. Fntastic will finally put its anticipated, promising, but unproven title in the hands of fans and ask them to take on a dangerous version of post-apocalyptic modern-day East Coast America, where the undead are just one of many threats that may prove to be a problem.
House Flipper 2 (PC) – Dec. 14
We love buying terrible houses, fixing them up and reselling them for a big profit turnover, and this is exactly why Frozen District is gearing up to release the House Flipper sequel on PC in December. House Flipper 2 is coming to consoles a few months later in 2024 and will give players better and wider options with how they improve the properties they buy, further improving the customizability and personalization potential in this follow-up.
Pokémon Scarlet/Violet: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero – The Indigo Disk (Switch) – Dec. 14
We don’t usually cover expansions in Games To Look For, but since this might be the biggest and only major first-party addition coming to the Switch in December, we had to include it. Pokémon Scarlet/Violet expands for the second and final time this month, when The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero – The Indigo Disk makes its debut, with a new area filled with all sorts of new and returning pocket monsters, as well as more trainers to fight against, and a new storyline to follow.
And there we have it. 2023 is officially in the books in terms of Games To Look For. We’ll be back in late December, over the vacation break, to give you a preview of the biggest and most exciting games planned for 2024 as a whole, before looking early in the new year at the January 2024 additions.
