Several hands-on impressions and new gameplay for Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have become available as the Tokyo Game Show 2023 has kicked off. Two parts of the game are shown – Fated Beginnings: Cloud and Sephiroth, set in the past, and The World of FF7 Rebirth: Junon Area, set after the events of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Check out the gameplay below, courtesy of Dengeki Online and Famitsu.
In the first part, Cloud and Sephiroth explore Nibelheim, with Tifa in their company. Fans will be familiar with the tragedy affecting the city, but for now the two SOLDIERs work together. Sephiroth is playable and performs powerful attacks, while the overall play area includes climbable sections and collectible chests. There is even a boss battle against a Materia Guardian.
The second section focuses on Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, Barret and Red XIII after they escape from Midgar. While exploring Junon, which offers more freedom of exploration, they ride Chocobos (which are customizable with different cosmetics) and take on missions. Although it was small in the hands-on demo, Square Enix told Polygon that the area would be much larger in the final game.
As players explore, they arrive in Under Junon and take on the Terror of the Deep boss, about when Yuffie Kisaragi gets involved. Other powerful enemies called Fiends roam the landscape and serve as Elite enemies for the team to defeat with new Synergy attacks.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be released on February 29, 2024 for PS5.
